False-color infrared image of low clouds on Venus' night side, taken on February 10, 1990. Range 96,600 kilometers (60,000 miles) above the planet. P-37539
Venus is shrouded in thick sulfuric acid clouds many kilometers thick, so using a standard camera in visible light to take pictures of the planet results in a bland- looking ball. In this image, Galileo us ...

Cloud Types
As Joni Mitchell wrote in her famous song lyric, and Craig Bohren has illustrated more scientifically in various writings and lectures, the apparent structure of clouds, as seen by observers on the surface or in aircraft, or as portrayed in satellite images, is often misleading. In the photograph on the left, taken by a ground observer, the apparent relative altitude of the two clouds depends on whether the sun is assumed to be nearest the horizon or the zenith. Also, the ...

Bad Meteorology:
The reason clouds form when air cools is because
cold air cannot hold as much water vapor as warm air.
Cumulus cloud over Vancouver, Canada
When moist air cools, a cloud can form. This much is true. The process is responsible for the cumulus cloud over Vancouver and the cap cloud ...

My name is Mike Breezy. My beat is the sky. I'm an air detective. I was sitting in my office the other day when my phone rang. A woman's voice that sounded as smooth as honey said to me, "I've got a hot tip for you."
I said to her, "Spill it."
She said, "I've got the dirt on clouds. There's water in the air. Water we can't see. This invisible water makes up clouds. And the thing that affects both the water and the clouds is the air temperature. And bring home a gallon of milk tonight." Then my wife hung up the phone.
I was interested. As a sky detective, clouds are a big part of my business. I had to know if this tip was true or not. I'm an investigator. It's what I do. But first I had to pick up a gallon of milk.

Clouds are the pretty white fluffs you see in the sky. They are made up of tiny water drops. Sometimes, if the wind is fast enough, you can even watch the clouds move.
Clouds can come in all sizes and shapes. They can be near the ground or way up high. Ever wonder what different types of clouds are called?
Different types of clouds cause different kinds of weather. Sometime ...

CLOUDS
In this section, cloud formation is explained and typical clouds types that are associated with midlatitude cyclones are described. The cloud features within a mature cyclonic disturbance are typically organized in a comma form. Specific cloud types can be identified with polar orbiter images and, to a lesser extent, GOES images.
Air is comprised mainly of nitrogen and oxygen, but also contains a small amount of water vapor. Clouds form when a parcel of air is cooled until the wa ...

What are clouds?
Clouds are water. Either small liquid water drops or tiny pieces of ice. Meteorologists rank clouds according to their height and whether or not they are flat or puffy. The graph below is Dan's easy way to remember clouds.

CO2 CLOUDS: THEIR EFFECTS ON MARTIAN PALEOCLIMATE AND ON THE WIDTH OF THE HABITABLE ZONE
Abstract:
Recent work by Forget and Pierrehumbert (Science 278, 1273, 1997) has shown that CO2 clouds can, in some instances, exert a strong warming effect on planetary climates. These authors suggest that CO2 clouds were responsible for a warm (Earth ...

Nacreous Clouds
A display of nacreous or mother of pearl clouds were widely seen across the UK on the evening of February 16 1996. These clouds form in the stratosphere, at heights of between 10 and 30 km, when the temperature there falls below -80 oC and are probably composed of ice particles with a liquid coating of nitric acid tri- hydrate. They appear bright because they are high enough to be illuminated by the sun long after local sunset and the pastel colours arise through diffraction or ...

Cloud Climatology
March 1996
In order to predict the climate several decades into the future, we need to understand many aspects of the climate system, one being the role of clouds in determining climate sensitivity. Clouds affect climate, and are in turn affected by changes in the climate. The relationship is a complicated system of feedbacks, in which clouds modulate Earth's radiation balance.
