The Incredible Shrinking Mass Spectrometers
Miniaturization is on track to take MS into space and the doctor's office
Celia M. Henry
A quadrupole mass spectrometer the size of a shoe box? An ion trap on a chip? A time-of-flight mass analyzer with a 1-in. flight path? As little as five years ago, these things would have been the stuff of science fiction. However, today they are w ...

Better Instrumentation and Measurements through Spectrochemical Research
The Laboratory for Spectrochemistry (LFS) has several missions: 1) to develop spectrochemical measurements and instrumentation; 2) to characterize spectrochemical events and systems fundamentally through experimental measurements and theoretical modeling; 3) to solve practical problems through spectrochemical techniques; and 4) to integrate spectrochemical measurements and instrumentation with other techniques. Research in the LFS ranges from plasma physics to chemical sensors and includes both optical and mass spectrometry. Areas of application include on-site monitoring, environmental science, bioanalysis, and materials chemistry.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
Quantum Corrals
Scientists discovered a new method for confining electrons to artificial structures at the nanometer lengthscale. Surface state electrons on Cu(111) were confined to closed structures (corrals) defined by barriers built from Fe adatoms. The barriers were assembled by individually positioning Fe adatoms using the tip of a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). A circular corral of radius 71.3 Angstrom was constructed in thi ...

INTRODUCTION
Electrophoresis is the migration of charged molecules in solution in response to an electric field. Their rate of migration depends on the strength of the field; on the nett charge, size and shape of the molecules and also on the ionic strength, viscosity and temperature of the medium in which the molecules are moving. As an analytical tool, electrophores ...

Electrochemistry & Surface ScienceElectrochemistry & Surface Science
Most of our experiments involve electrodes or solid/vacuum interfaces, but this in no way defines our interests. We apply our techniques and expertise to the improving fuel cells and modern batteries, developing 'green' synthesis and technology for environmental protection, understanding and enhancing the performance of enzymes, fabricating and utilising nanostructured materials, devising combinatorial approaches to ...
