The eruption of Sunset Crater, AZ, in 1064 A.D. covered a 2,000 sq km area with ash and cinders, and exterminated the biosystem present at that time. The piñon-juniper woodland has since recolonized this hotter, dryer, nutrient-poor cinder environment.
