Grasshopper Melanoplus femurrubrum (Thomas). This is a cosmopolitan insect. Many species damage forage crops in South Carolina. Grasshoppers feed by eating the foliage of the plants. Injury may vary from a ragged plant to one with only the stem left. In South Carolina the winter is passed in the egg stage. The eggs are laid in the soil. In early spring the eggs hatch and the young grasshoppers, which resemble the adult except for the absence of wings, hatch. They are usually full grown by the middle of August. They continue to feed until frost. Eggs are laid during the latter part of September and October.
