When the Gospel was first preached in Britain, the island was inhabited by Celtic peoples. In the 500's, pagan Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, invaded Britain and drove the Christian Celts out of what is now England into Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. elizabeth's childhood
Life before Anne Boleyn's Execution
From her birth, Queen Elizabeth had a troubled family life. While Henry VIII was still married to Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth's mother, her life was comfortable. She resided at the Royal Palace at Hatfield, which was her own household. One of Elizabeth's attendants was the Lady Mary, her half sister, who had been stripped of the title of Princess after her mother (Catherine of Aragon)'s marriage to Henry VIII h ...

Gruffydd ap Llywelyn
King of Wales
Follow this link for a Welsh language version of this page!
Walker 1990
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was undoubtedly the outstanding Welsh ruler of the 11th century and the most distinguished prince to emerge since the days of Hywel Dda. He reigned from 1039 to 1063, but was an unexpected contender for power. By 1039 he was probably established in Powys, and in that year Iago ap Idwal of Gwynedd was murdered by his own men, perhaps with Gruffydd as an acco ...

A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF
CNUT THE GREAT:
EMPEROR OF THE NORTH
BY
WILLIAM BAKKEN
NOVEMBER 9, 1994
For the English people, King Cnut's reign from 1017 to 1035 was much like the month of March, "in like a lion and out like a lamb". 1 Crowned in the turmoil of war and conquest, Cnut quickly established an era of peace and prosperity. England became so secure that Cnut could frequently leave the country to settle affairs else ...

King Richard I - The Lionheart
A King Is Born
While Richard Plantagenet is revered as one of the great warrior kings of England, he is perhaps best known as "the absent king." This is due to the fact that during his reign from 1189-1199, he spent a total of six months in England. This aside Richard I was well known for his bravery which earned ...

eventeen kings ruled England, either by birth, military force or election by the Witan between 871 A.D and 1087 A.D. The definition of a king was difficult to define in those days. It was more a case of the dominant kingdom, such as Wessex, Supplying the king or more accurately, the Bretwalda or overlord. Whilst kingdoms were always on a semi war footing with each other, It is a matter of conjecture who finally could be called the first "KING OF ENGLAND". Many histor ...

Mary, Queen of Scots born 1542
Born on 8 December 1542, Mary’s life was complicated from the first week when her father, James V, died and made her Queen when she was six days old. With James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, as Governor, Scotland was achieving closer ties with England. Queen Mary was betrothed, in 1543, to Edward, the six-year-old son and heir of Henry VIII.
Edward was the male heir Henry had re-married for, and Mary’s Roman Catholic, pro-French guardians stepped in to have ...
