Tips and Techniques
Compiled by Katherine Dewey
Over the years, Katherine has accumulated a wide array of techniques, some from constant experimentation with the medium, and some from interaction with the community of polymer clay artists. She devotes much of her time developing hands on classes for many of the country's polymer clay guilds, sharing the sculpting techniques she uses; however, that method doesn't reach the numbers of aspiring sculptors she wo ...

Homemade clay projects for kids
Make animals, beads, or a memorable hand print with these crafty ideas.
Clay craft is wonderful to do with kids in school, with church groups or at home. There are a variety of recipes. Some are for air-hardening clay, others are for bake-in-the-oven clay. There is also a clay, similar to play dough which can be used over and over again. Working with clay is an experience. You sink your hands into the clay and feel the cool, malleable material. Then you ...

Jeanne's World
A few years ago, a group of friends invited me to a party. They were going to spend a few hours playing with something called "Fimo" - some sort of colored clay. "You can do really neat things with it," they said. "We'll make some beads," they said. "It's completely cool,", they said. "No, we can't explain it any better than that - you have to actually see it in action," they said.
A few hours, and I was undone. I've been addicted to the stuff since.

Whistle Making Sequence...Technique by Chris Henley:
Below you will find a sequence of photographs with accompanying text that describes the fundamentals of a clay whistle making technique I discovered quite by accident sometime around 1970. It is simple and works every time, if you follow the sequence. However, there are a few variables that come into play. Generally, the more plastic the clay, and the smaller the inclusions (grog/sand) the easier it is to form the more d ...
