BENO GUTENBERG (1889-1960)
Beno Gutenberg was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on June 4, 1889. He completed all of his university education at the University of Göttingen, receiving his Ph.D. there in 1911. As a student, he chose geophysics as his field of endeavor and joined the Geophysical Institute, newly established by Emil Wiechert, a pioneer in the emerging science of seismology. His dissertation was on microseisms, a topic he returned to in the latter years of World War II when he attempt ...

Can You Read a Quake?
©1995 The Regents of the University of California
An earthquake has just hit. Can you tell where? You first need to know how to read a seismogram.
To do this activity...
You should review how a seismograph works before you do this activity.
A good seismograph can detect seismic waves from an earthquake thousands of kilometers away. In this activity, you will learn how to understand and get information from a seismogram. When you know how to read a seismogram, you ...

Mori
an Internet-based earthwork
Ken Goldberg, Randall Packer, Wojciech Matusik and Gregory Kuhn
Berkeley, California, USA
``All flesh is grass.'' -- Isaiah (40:6)
In Mori, the immediacy of the telematic embrace between earth and visitor questions the authenticity of mediated experience in the context of chance, human fragility, and geological endurance.
Mori engages the earth as a living medium. Minute movements of the Hayward Fault in California are detected by a seismograph, conver ...

What is Richter Magnitude?
Short answer:
Seismologists use a Magnitude scale to express the seismic energy released by each earthquake. Here are the typical effects of earthquakes in various magnitude ranges:
Earthquake Severity
Richter Earthquake
Magnitudes Effects
Less than 3.5 Generally not felt, but recorded.
3.5-5.4 Often felt, but rarely causes damage.
Under 6.0 At most slight damage to well-designed buildings.
Can cause major damage to poo ...
