ABAG Earthquake Shaking Hazard Maps
Directions for viewing an earthquake shaking hazard map -
Earthquakes in the Bay Area are caused by rupturing of a fault or fault segment. Thus, to view an earthquake intensity map of your area, you need to both select an area (city) and select a fault as the source of the earthquake. Note: only maps of the region, not individual cities, are available for the two thrust faults at this time.
STEP 1 - Choose a city from the first window.
STEP 2 - Cho ...

Earth's Interior
More about earthquakes | Nevada Seismological Lab | Nevada earthquakes | Univ. of Nevada, Reno
Five billion years ago the Earth was formed in a massive conglomeration and bombardment of meteorites and comets. The immense amount of heat energy released by the high-velocity bombardment melted the entire planet, and it is still cooling off today. Denser materials like iron (Fe) from the meteroites sank into the core of the Earth, while lighter silicates (Si), other ...

EARTHFORCE
i n t h e c r u s t
Go outside, find a flat piece of ground, and stand perfectly still. You won't be able to notice it, but the ground beneath your feet is moving. Imagine that you are balancing on a raft on a pond, gently drifting. If you live on the North American continent, the ground beneath you is one giant raft drifting westward very slowly, about 2.5 centimeters (one inch) per year. Get a ruler and think about that. Imagine that you move ...

The Modified Mercalli Scale
of Earthquake Intensity
In seismology a scale of seismic intensity is a way of measuring or rating the effects of an earthquake at different sites. The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale is commonly used in the United States by seismologists seeking information on the severity of earthquake effects. Intensity ratings are expressed as Roman numerals between I at the low end and XII at the high end.
The Intensity Scale differs from the Richter Magnitude Scale in that ...

Earthquakes: Facts and Fiction
Fiction: Earthquakes usually happen in the morning.
Fact: Earthquakes happen in both the day and the night. There is no pattern.
Fiction: There is such a thing as "earthquake weather."
Fact: There is no connection between earthquakes and weather. Remember, earthquakes happen deep in the earth, far away from the weather!
Fiction: Earthquakes are on the increase.
Fact: It may seem like we’re having more earthquakes because there are more reporting stations, but the truth is we’re not.
Fiction: We can prevent earthquakes from happening.
Fact: No. You can protect yourself by doing things to secure buildings, like your home, but earthquakes can’t be prevented -- or predicted.

Why do some places have earthquakes, and other places don't? Are some regions prone to quakes while others immune? When will the next big one hit? Are we prone to earthquakes in Illinois?
Seismologists, the scientists who study earthquakes, have developed a global network of seismograph stations which continually monitor for quakes, even small ones which cannot be felt. The data which they collect are recorded and processed on computers at key research centers throughout the world. NSL Helicorder Camera Explained
Why We Show the Helicorders
The NSL Helicorder Camera is meant to give Internet users a view of raw seismic data, as it comes into our Lab. We hope that users in Nevada and eastern California who believe they might have felt an earthquake will be able to look here 24 hours, every day of the year, to tentatively confirm whether the Seismological Lab has also recorded an earthquake. During the day, including most Saturdays and Sundays, you can call the Lab at (77 ...

A Deadly Force
by Daniel Pendick
Though it's true that tsunamis are ocean waves, calling them by the same name as the ordinary wind-driven variety is a bit like referring to firecrackers and atomic warheads both as "explosives." Triggered by volcanic eruptions, landslides, earthquakes, and even impacts by asteroids or comets, a tsunami represents a vast volume of seawater in motion -- the source of its destructive power.
The Japanese characters for ...

Seismic Deformation
When an earthquake fault ruptures, it causes two types of deformation: static; and dynamic. Static deformation is the permanent displacement of the ground due to the event. The earthquake cycle progresses from a fault that is not under stress, to a stressed fault as the plate tectonic motions driving the fault slowly proceed, to rupture during an earthquake and a newly-relaxed but deformed state.
Typically, someone will build a straight reference line such as a road, rail ...
