Burgess Shale fossils
The Burgess Shale is an exceptional Middle Cambrian age (about 540 million years ago) fossil locality located in Yoho National Park in the Rocky Mountains, near Field, British Columbia, Canada. The locality is special because of the soft-bodied preservation of a wide diversity of fossil invertebrate animals. The locality has been intensely studied since its discovery in 1909 by Charles Walcott, and has been declared a World Heritage Site. A popular introduction to the Burg ...

Fossils becoming bones of contention; Agencies try to balance access, protection from theft
Ed Timms
September 7, 1994
CHADRON, Neb. - Barbara Beasley walked past the fossil remains of turtles, scattered across the bleached clay soil like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. She stopped a few times to contemplate a chunk of fossilized bone. The fossil wealth in the remote badlands and grasslands of northwestern Nebraska is well-known to scientists, who have made important discoveries there for m ...

Mazon Creek Fossil Exhibit
The plants and animals found in concretions recovered from the Francis Creek Shale are some of the most exciting and important fossils that have been found in the state of Illinois. These fossils are known as the Mazon Creek fossils because they were originally found along Mazon Creek in northeastern Illinois.
The quality and diversity of fossils recovered in Mazon Creek nodules makes these localities important worldwide. In most ...

Localities of the Cambrian:
The Burgess Shale
Introduction and Discovery of the Burgess Shale
The Burgess Shale is found in an area of the Canadian Rocky Mountains known as the Burgess Pass, and is located in British Columbia's Yoho National Park. Part of the ancient landmass called Laurentia, centered in Hudson Bay, the Burgess Shale represents one of the most diverse and well-preserved fossil localities in the world. These fossils have been gathered from shales of the Stephen Format ...

"The world's most significant fossil discovery."
High in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is a fossil find of epic proportions, The Burgess Shale - "the world’s most significant fossil discovery"!
Discovered in 1909 in Yoho National Park by Charles D. Walcott, the Burgess Shale not only challenges the evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin, but provides a glimpse of what life was like on Earth - 505 million years ago!.

The Paleo Project....
A collection of Trilobites
Have you ever imagined what it was like to be a Trilobite ? Swimming and crawling in the warm, shallow Paleozoic Oceans that covered the continents as we know them today. A time when life on Earth was in the beginnings. A time when major events are happening on Earth for the first time. Animals with eyes, animals living in colonies, vertebrates evolving, insects taking flight. The Paleozoic Era spans a time of 300 million years ...

The Semi-Compleat Trilobite
(about the title)
A far more complete presentation of trilobite images, links, and related information can be found at Kevin Brett's Trilobite home page.
The quality of some images presented here is not great because I often use a video-capture setup with limited resolution. It is more convenient than film, and, most importantly, it saves film and processing costs for a project which is just for fun.
The trilobite images are arranged in approximate stratigraphic o ...

The Major Fossil Groups
Fossils can be grouped and studied in many ways, by size, habitat type, or phylogenetic groups. Large fossils like dinosaurs, corals, echinoderms, and macro-mollusks (macrofossils) were the primary emphasis of paleontologic studies in the 1700's, 1800's and early 1900's, because they were easily recognizable in the field and did not require special equipment to study them. As new and better microscopes were invented, more and more paleontologists began to use m ...
