Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory
AST/RO is a 1.7 meter diameter submillimeter-wave telescope in operation at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station since January 1995. Because of its exceptionally cold and dry atmosphere, the South Pole is the best ground-based observatory site for astronomical observations at submillimeter wavelengths. The scientific program is currently focused on spectroscopic observations of atomic and molecular clouds in the Milky Way and other galaxies ...

Automatic Geophysical Observatories
Continued progress in understanding the Sun's influence on the structure and dynamics of the Earth's upper atmosphere depends upon increasing knowledge of the electrodynamics of the polar cap region and the key role that this region plays in coupling the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere. Measurements that are central to understanding include the electric field convection pattern across the polar cap and knowledge of the r ...

Located at the edge of campus between the woods and where Indiana Avenue meets 4th street, this building is the most obvious and accessible of our facilities. It houses a 0.3 meter (12 inch) refracting telescope which is used for undergraduate studies. The telescope is staffed for free public viewing each Wednesday evening, March through October, when classes are in session. If the weather is clear, the observatory opens just after dark. No reservations are necessary.
Kirkwood Observatory also has a solar telescope with which solar phenomena can be studied. Group showings are available by contacting the Astronomy Department at (812) 855-6911, or by sending Email to request@astro.indiana.edu.

NURO, the National Undergraduate Research Observatory, is a consortium of primarily undergraduate education institutions from around the country, both public and private, that have joined together to provide training and research experiences for their students.
Together they share 120 nights per year on Lowell Observatory's 31-inch telescope, with instrumentation and observer support provided by Northern Arizona University through its Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Astronomers and students at the member schools collaborate on key research projects, as well as conduct their own private research.
The consortium's mission is to encourage more students to pursue careers in science.

The Mullard Radio Astronomy ObservatoryASTROPHYSICS
Radio Astronomy at Cambridge
Radio astronomy is the study of celestial objects by means of the natural radio waves they emit. It tells us about the Solar System, our own Galaxy (the Milky Way), radio galaxies, quasars and cosmology. The signals emitted by radio sources can be received from the most distant parts of the Universe, though they are very weak when they reach us. Some of the problems are fundamental, like star formation, the ene ...

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Information en franais
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is taking data that has provided revolutionary insight into the properties of neutrinos and the core of the sun. The detector, shown in the artist's conception below, was built 6800 feet under ground, in INCO's Creighton mine near Sudbury, Ontario. SNO is a heavy-water Cherenkov detector that is designed to detect neutrinos produced by fusion reactions in the sun. It uses 1000 tonnes of heavy water ...
