They, of course, were built for discretely kissing your favorite girl while on a long buggy ride home from church.
One resists the more practical reason nineteenth-century artisans walled-up the sides and placed a roof over the way across the river. The purpose is ...

The modern world exists in a state of cultural, political, and economic globalisation. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries two nations, Portugal and Spain, pioneered the European discovery of sea routes that were the first channels of interaction between all of the world's continents, thus beginning the process of globalisation in which we all live today. This tutorial introduces the student to these two pioneering nations, their motivations, their actions, and t ...

Kronan
The 126 gun battleship Kronan was built in 1668 by Francis Sheldon and was one of the world's largest ships in its time. She was 53 m long and 14 m wide.
During battle against a Danish-Dutch fleet in June 1676, Kronan listed heavily during a badly prepared turn, then suddenly exploded and quickly sank with 800 men. Only 42 survived. What caused the blast is a mystery, perhaps something broke loose during the list and ignited the gunpowder. Possibly Lorentz Creutz, the newly appointed co ...

Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks
The cold fresh water of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have preserved an important part of our history - in shipwrecks! Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first gen ...

It lies in 25-45 feet of water in a generally upright position on Chub Reef, one of Bermuda's outer fringing reefs to the south and west of Gibbs Hill lighthouse. "A noble tribute to the imagination of man"
Once called 'The Inevitable Ship', the Queen Mary has survived to see the passing of seven decades, witnessing a passage of time and history that has given rise to many turning points in the history of mankind. The Queen Mary herself, playing a role in not only the epic events of World War II, but the transport of millions of passengers during her 1001 voyages across the North Atlantic, has gained a special place in 20th century history.

Ten, six-masted schooners were built during the brief span of 1900 through 1909. As America grew, so did the need of cargo vessels for the Atlantic coastal coal trade. The bigger the ship, the greater the profits. These beautiful ships, with their smaller crews, were economical to operate and met the demand. Launchings proliferated on the USA northeast coast. Alas, their lifetime was sometimes short and, unfortunately, disastrous for some.

THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE
The Hanseatic League was not so much a league of cities as it was a league of merchant associations within the cities of Northern Germany and the Baltic. Trade in the middle ages was a dangerous and risky business and the only way for merchants to protect themselves was by travelling together. This banding together of merchants on the road led to their alliances at home as well. In the case of the Hanseatic league the impetus for its formation was trade along the Kiel ...

As long as there have been floating vessels, mariners have found safe harbor in San Francisco Bay, beginning with the first people in the Americas thousands of years ago.
The Maritime Heritage Project was established in 1998 to preserve San Francisco's shipping history from the mid-1800s to the turn of the Century. The Project focus is on steamships plying the West Coast of the United States, their captains, and passengers.

William Jennings Bryan:
American Protest Over the Sinking of the Lusitania
Please call on the minister of foreign affairs and, after reading to him this communication, leave him with a copy.
In view of recent acts of the German authorities in violation of American rights on the high seas which culminated in the torpedoing and sinking of the British steamship Lusitania on May 7, 1915, by which over 100 American citizens lost their lives, it is clearly wise and desirable that the gover ...
