Welcome to the Biological Indicators home page. This site contains information about the Biological Indicators Program in the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Biological indicators have been developed and applied at a variety of field sites in the eastern United States to assess and evaluate the effects that environmental stressors such as contaminants have on the health of aquatic organisms, populations, and communities.

KELP FORESTS
Kelp forests occur in cold, nutrient-rich water and are among the most beautiful and biologically productive habitats in the marine environment. They are found throughout the world in shallow open coastal waters, and the larger forests are restricted to temperatures less than 20ºC, extending to both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.
