The Water Gardens
Without Java, you can't see the lovely Lake animation. Here's the still version:
Welcome to my water gardens here in Jefferson County, Colorado! I started outdoor water gardening in 1995, with one whiskey barrel to see just how hard it was to maintain. The whiskey barrel had one water lily, one tall marginal called Sweet Galingale, and a bunch of guppies to eat the mosquito larva. It proved to be both easy to maintain and a pretty addition to the back porch. In 1996, t ...

Adding a water garden has made a dramatic difference to our backyard as you can see below...
Before
After
Since we built most of it ourselves and we had no experience in pond building, we spent nearly every weekend during the summer of 1994 constructing it. However, it has made a striking difference in our backyard and was well worth the time and effort.

Build A Simple Bog Garden
Bog plants are an interesting group of plants that thrive in bog conditions. Here is a project to create bog-like conditions for plants that thrive with their roots submersed in water. This will give you some ideas on how to create your own bog. If you can't find the container I used, use your imagination since many containers made for other uses can be used in this project.
This project takes not more than a few hours to finish once you have your container, p ...

Building a Sphagnum Bog Garden
by Roberta and Fred Case
Sphagnum moss makes an ideal substrate in which to grow some of the showy and more difficult bog and swamp plants, especially carnivorous plants and certain native orchids. And sphagnum moss is attractive in itself.
Sphagnum moss requires a constant source of suitable water. Chlorinated or very limey water kills it. However, placing it in a bog next to a pond can solve the water problem. Growing it on neutral or acid sand is a sui ...

Controlling Algae in Your Water Garden
Contact: Diane Relf, Extension Specialist, Environmental Horticulture
August 1996
There are various forms of algae that grow in a water garden, and when kept under control, some algae is desirable because it acts as a water purifier and a home to necessary microorganisms. A well-balanced water garden has a thin layer of algae on everything that is under water.
You can control algae several ways -- chemically; through filtration; using bacterial ...

A Place to Relax, Smell the Flowers, and Listen to The Waterfall
Pictured here is our pond, which was constructed May, 1996. It is a place for "grownups" to sit, listen to the soothing falls, and unwind. Perhaps I should start out by explaining how this idea came about. I had been admiring a friends' pond for quite sometime and was putting it off because of our young children. This spring, amidst the swingset and toys, we decided that "we" needed a place of our own-since the whole yard had ...

Our Pond!
Our pond is about 16,000 gallons. It took us 6 months to build it and it is an on going landscaping project at this point. We had lots of help from friends and neighbors. The backhoe we used to dig the main hole and excavate rocks belongs to my neighbor Ed Grove. Everytime he started to dig around my hose design, it looked too small so we kept on making it bigger! When he stopped we all dropped our jaws and thought, "Oh my god! What have we gotten ourselves into!"
I solicited anot ...

The First Step
The most important thing is to do research. The first thing we did was check out the different pond pages on the web. My first exposure to the Internet was The Garden Exchange . In this site there are many forums on all different gardening topics. It was here that I scanned other "ponders" questions, and the responses given by others. It also gave me links to many different web-sites that were useful to help with pond construction. One of my favorites is Pams Puddle. After ...

Welcome to the Pond Pals Tour. The Pond Pals are water gardening enthusiasts who have published web pages featuring their ponds. The idea for the Pond Pals Tour originated with a group of ponders on AOL and has expanded to include pond pages from all over the Internet. As of July 1999 the Pond Pals Tour is both International and Intercontinental! The USA tour is organized by Gardening Zones. An International page has been added to feature ponds from other countries. A new feature, the Pond Photo Gallery has been added for 2003. The Gallery is designed to feature pictures of ponds for those who would like to share their ponds without creating a web page.
We hope you enjoy your visit!

SMALL POND BASICS - A MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
RELY ON NATURAL BALANCE, NOT CHEMICALS
If you give the pond time to settle after filling, time to mature after planting, and introduce just a few fish and some pond snails, the pond will reach a state of balance. If you start adding chemicals, you'll always have to add chemicals.

Water Gardening
Water Gardening can be fun and exciting, however, it can be a royal pain too. The key to a successful water garden is:
1: Filtration Systems5: "Critters" for your pond
2: Goldfish and Koi6: From Ugly to Paradise
3: Green Water "Bloom"7: Pond Pics
4: Pond or Water Garden8: Daphnia, Amphipods, Hydra

Overall Guidelines. Fertilizing should stop about six weeks before first frost. "Hardy" plants should generally be allowed to go dormant for the winter. FOUNTAINS & BIRDBATHS
Living in an apartment in the city, one would think there would hardly be room for a pond. But with a little imagination and a lot of effort it was possible to capture that feeling. The sound of running water soothes the soul and now I have that essence in my very own yard.
My apartment building has approx. 6'x 14' of yard area. In that space, I have not only installed a submerged pond but proudly display a four tiered fountain and two tiered fountain and two birdb ...
