C reating pages for the World Wide Web takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun. The first step is to decide what you want to publish in your Web page. If you've been working on the Shoemaker-Levy 9 activity, you've already collected lots of astronomy-related facts and images. Or maybe you want to publish a story you've written, or share reviews of books you've read, or create an electronic magazine related to one of your hobbies... Whatever you want to pu ...

CONTROLLING DOCUMENT BACKGROUNDS
THE BACKGROUND ATTRIBUTE
Recent versions of the proposed HTML 3.0 spec. have added a BACKGROUND attribute to the BODY tag. The purpose of this attribute is to specify a URL pointing to an image that is to be used as a background for the document. In Netscape 1.1, this background image is used to tile the full background of the document-viewing area. Thus specifying:

Hints for Web Authors
By Warren Steel
I've been working on World Wide Web documents since spring 1994, when I attended a seminar at the Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research (MCSR). At the University of Mississippi I manage a web site for the department of music with some 120 HTML documents, a site for Sacred Harp singing with 120 documents plus associated graphics, and a personal site.
I find the Web world to be complex and in rapid flux. I began web authorship without much to go o ...

Definition: Aesthetics - Of or concerning the appreciation of beauty or good taste.
A simpler topic, but one that I want to rattle off about. Web Aesthetics could be a good title, when this is later archived. With this web medium we have the growing capabilities to control exactly what you, the 'surfer' sees when you check out our pages. Unfortunately, not all of us are graphic ...

Text-friendly authoring topics
Let me start by trying to dispel a common misunderstanding. "Text-friendly authoring" isn't in the least about eviscerating your web documents by cutting out all the other media such as images, sound, executable code etc. On the contrary: the intention is to use the appropriate media for each purpose, and to use them to the full; but to avoid those other media getting in the way for readers who cannot use them. Nor is it about creating a complete additional text ...

What You See Is Not What Others Get on the Web
You've created what you thought was the perfect Web page for your business. Then you get a call from your friend, Jim, who just looked at it on a different, perhaps less tolerant browser from what you used to "check" your page.
He asks: "Who designed this page?" You can tell from his tone that something's wrong. So you tell him, "Hey, it's just a first draft."
He then proceeds to tell you what's wrong with it. You don't understand why it do ...
