This exhibition is closed.
We live on an ocean planet. Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and contain most of its ecosystems. This exhibit explores two marine ecosystems: a tropical coral reef and a temperate rocky shore. Visitors can walk through a rocky shore ecosystem and discover what eats what, view living models of these two ecosystems, learn how humans impact marine ecosystems and what can be done to preserve them, and investigate the behind-the-scenes work of museum scientists. Also on display in the Museum are a giant squid, a life size model of the blue whale, and a large marlin.

Every day brings news of human beings' impact on the life-support system known as Earth. But what is the truth behind the headlines? In 1999, an international group of more than 70 scientists analyzed the condition of the five ecosystems on which all life most heavily depends — freshwater, agriculture, forests, grasslands, and coastal ecosystems. Their findings are the scientific basis for Earth on Edge, which premiered on PBS June 19th, 2001 at 8 P.M. (check local listings). The progra ...

The SEA program was a multidisciplinary, ecosystem-level investigation of factors affecting recovery of pink salmon and Pacific herring in Prince William Sound, Alaska following the 1989 oil spill. Conceived in 1993, SEA was part of the restoration effort sponsored by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) Trustee Council.
The 7 year program involved 13 coordinated research projects led by investigators from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Marine Science (IMS-UAF) , the Prince ...

nvironmental problems are the number one issue facing society, and SEI is out on the front lines, dealing with these crises and conflicts on a daily basis. We are the scientists and ecologists who have spent our time in labs and in the field, building knowledge and techniques, but unless we assume a new role in society and put our expertise to use, we cannot hope to sustain vital ecosystems or the human communities which depend upon them. SEI is ready to meet this challenge, and I inv ...
