According to tradition, Queen Tamara (1184-1213) and other rulers used white, black, and cherry red for their flags. The current flag was first hoisted on March 25, 1917, replaced under Soviet rule, and readopted on Nov. 14, 1990. Cherry red is the national color, black stands for past tragedies, and white is for hope.
