The flag was first hoisted at independence (Oct. 12, 1968). Its coat of arms shows the silk-cotton tree, or god tree, which recalls early Spanish influence in the area. The sea linking parts of the country is reflected in the blue triangle. The green is for vegetation, white for peace, and red for the blood of martyrs in the liberation struggle.
