Bridgeport
Bridgeport Covered Bridge
The Bridgeport Covered Bridge is one of the longest single-span covered bridges in the country. Built by David Ingerfield John Wood in 1862, the bridge stretches 230 feet across the swift-flowing South Fork of the Yuba River, and was part of the Virginia Turnpike Company Toll Road that once served the Northern Mines and Nevada’s Comstock Lode. The bridge was constructed with native lumber from Woods’ mill in Plum Valley, in nearby Sierra County. The exter ...

BEDFORD COUNTY COVERED BRIDGES
Bedford County is blessed with 14 covered bridges. Few places have covered bridges set in more picturesque settings and with more variety than in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. These structures were built approximately 100 years ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, making structures that would withstand the rain, snow and hard use of the travelling public.
The county's bridges range in length from the 136 foot Herlin ...

Covered Bridges of Cheshire County
If you pass along a quiet New England road in fall and come upon what appears to be someone's misplaced home, you're tempted to recall the romantic version of the origin of covered bridges... They, of course, were built for discretely kissing your favorite girl while on a long buggy ride home from church.
One resists the more practical reason nineteenth-century artisans walled-up the sides and placed a roof over the way across the river. The purpose is ...

Covered Bridges of Cottage Grove, Oregon
Six covered bridges in Cottage Grove have helped earn it the title of "Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon". Building dates of the bridges range from 1925 to 1987. Since steel and concrete were so expensive and high-quality timber was more accessible, the covered bridges were built from wood and then covered to keep the rain from ruining them. The older bridges are monuments to many hours of skilled hand labor. The bridges can be toured in a cou ...

Covered Bridges in Indiana
Indiana's covered bridge era began in the early 1830s when the National Road first crossed the state. The first Hoosier covered bridge was completed in 1835 in Henry County. It is estimated that between 400 and 500 covered bridges may have existed in Indiana. The American Society of Civil Engineers suggests that perhaps 10,000 covered bridges were built in the United States between 1805 and 1885.
Because the bridges were constructed with timber, they were covered to ...

Flood, fire and modernization have taken their toll on the covered bridges of Michigan. Where once hundreds of covered bridges spanned the State's rivers and creeks, now less than a dozen remain
Though few in number compared with neighboring states, Michigan's covered bridges offer a diversity of settings and architectural styles spanning a broad range of history and culture.
The remaining group includes original 19th century survivors, replicas of predecessors lost to the elements, and a t ...

OREGON'S BRIDGES UNCOVER SIMPLER TIMES
By ROBERT S. KLINDT
Mercury News Staff Writer
EUGENE, Ore.
When I first told my friends I was going to spend my vacation touring covered bridges in Oregon, I was greeted with blank stares and polite comments like ``Well, isn't that . . . interesting?''
I guess I can't blame them for their lack of enthusiasm. To many people nowadays -- especially Californians -- covered bridges, like horses and buggies, dirt roads and Model T's, seem distant a ...

In the 1930's there were over 300 covered bridges in Oregon. Today, there are 53, the largest concentration in the western United States. Timber, used to construct bridges, was an easily accessable building material. It was discovered, however, that if they were covered, the life of the bridge was greatly increased and thus requiring very l ...

Oregon's Covered Bridges
Most people think of quaint New England villages when they think of covered bridges, but Oregon also has it's share. Today, many are preserved next to new concrete spans and some have been converted into roadside parks, but there are still a wonderful few bridges that still serve Oregon's highways.

History of the Covered Bridge
More than 40 covered bridges once dotted the Wisconsin countryside. Today the sole survivor is the Cedarburg bridge, originally known as the "Red Bridge", located three miles north of the City of Cedarburg and 20 miles north of Milwaukee near the junction of Highways 60 and 143 on the Covered Bridge Road.
After 85 years of continuous service, the old landmark began a life of semi-retirement. A modern span was built beside the old ...

The Covered Bridges of Madison County
Originally boasting 19 covered bridges, six remain today, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges were named for the resident who lived closest.
