THINKING ABOUT ADVANCED DIRECTIVES
by Emily Carton, MA LISW
When I began working with older people nearly twenty years ago, the idea that one day I would be old seemed distant and remote. Just as a child thinks of reaching the age of twenty one or thirty or forty as abstract and unimaginable, the idea of aging was something that I saw in o ...

Ancient Egyptian Religion
Religion guided every aspect of Egyptian life. Egyptian religion was based on polytheism, or the worship of many deities, except for during the reign of Akenaton. The Egyptians had as many as 2000 gods and goddesses. Some, such as Amun, were worshipped throughout the whole country, while others had only a local following. Often gods and goddesses were represented as part human and part animal.
For example, Horus, the sky god, had the head of a hawk, and body ...

Funeral customs & the wake
The burial of the dead (cremation is traditionally uncommon) is a matter taken very seriously in Chinese societies. Improper funeral arrangements can wreak ill fortune and disaster upon the family of the deceased.
To a certain degree, Chinese funeral rites and burial customs are determined by the age of the deceased, the manner of his/her death, his/her status and position in society and his/her marital status.
According to Chinese custom, an older person sh ...

Death, Dying Are Still Difficult Topics For Counselors
5-26-98
University Park, Pa. -- Death and dying can still be taboo subjects, even for rehabilitation counselors in hospitals, nursing homes and prisons who must accept the death of clients as an occupational fact of life.
"Most counselors do not come into the field to work with people who are dying, nor are they prepared to face the reality of client death," says Dr. Brandon B. Hunt, assistant professor of counselor education, counselin ...

What is euthanasia?
Euthanasia is the intentional killing of a person, for compassionate motives, whether the killing is by a direct action, such as a lethal injection, or by failing to perform an action an action necessary to main life. For euthanasia to occur, there must be an intention to kill.
What is so-called passive euthanasia?

Euthanasia
The word euthanasia comes from the Greek meaning "kind death". It is a deliberate, controlled way of ending an animal's life if it is suffering in any way.
At some point you may have to make the hardest decision you have ever made regarding your pet's welfare. Your pet may have a severe injury, a painful disability, an incurable illness or another life debilitating condition, at this point putting your pet to sleep, or euthanasia, may be the best option for your pet. If your ...

According to traditional stories of the life of the Buddha, he first decided to leave his home and seek enlightenment after encountering the "four sights"-(I) a sick person, (2) an old person, (3) a corpse, and (4) a world renouncer. The first three epitomize the sufferings to which ordinary beings are subjects and the last indicates that one can transcend them through meditation and religious practice. The greatest problem of all is death, the final cessation of all ...

Funerals
It is important to recognize that funerals are for the living - for those who will suffer the trauma of losing a loved one. It is through the funeral process that emotional needs are served for those who grieve. A funeral is similar to other major lifetime ceremonies. Like a graduation, a wedding, a baptism, or a bar mitzvah, a funeral is a rite of passage by which we pay tribute to an important milestone in our lives. Why Have a Funeral?
Pat Andrus, MS

Funerals really are for the living. This may be hard to accept in our thinking. Funerals are for the persons suffering the trauma of the death... the death of a family member, friend, pet, or perhaps other losses. By pre-arranging our own service, we express our preferences, likes and dislikes, as well as something of our hopes and desires. We exert a type of control over the last event of our liv ...

Military Funeral Customs
DRAPING THE CASKET WITH THE
NATIONAL FLAG:
This custom began during the Napoleonic Wars (1796-1815). The dead carried from the field of battle on a caisson were covered with a flag. When the U.S. flag covers the casket, it is placed so the union blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder. It is not placed in the grave and is not allowed to touch the ground.
