A PICTORIAL HISTORY
OF THE
SOUTHERN PAIUTES
By
Michael R. Stephenson
and
Shaun Jaggi
Introduction : The Southern Paiute, or Nuwuvi (The People), came into the plateaus of the Colorado around 1100-1200 AD. It is believed that they coexisted with the Anasazi and Fremont cultures, who as time passed, moved on, possibly because of the newcomers or other unknown reasons. After the disappearance of these cultures, the land was ...

Later Prehistoric Tribal Associations
copyright 1996 by Tad Beckman
Tribalism is one of the most severely misunderstand aspects of indigenous life in the Americas. Anglo-Americans and Europeans of the Nineteenth Century were well prepared to relate to nation states; consequently, it was easy for them to assume that Indian tribes were simply "primitive", or "incipient", nation states. Americans naively assumed that a deal, or treaty, struck with some representatives of a tribe would be ...

Four Faces of Pocahontas
Many different depictions of Pocahontas exist today. Pictured clockwise from top left: Mary Ellen Howe (1994), Robert Matthew Sully (1850s), Thomas Sully (1852), Jean Leon Ferris (c. 1921) courtesy of William E. Ryder and the Virginia Historical Society.
According to Native American lore, her parents knew her as "Amonte" and her secret clan name was "Matoaca." Her European Christian friends called her "Lady Rebecca." Many have revered her as the "mother" of ...

History of Native Americans in Utah
Taken from the Utah History Encyclopedia
NATIVE AMERICANS IN UTAH
Long before Euro-Americans entered the Great Basin, substantial numbers of people lived within the present boundaries of Utah. Archaeological reconstructions suggest human habitation stretching back some 12,000 years. The earliest known inhabitants were members of what has been termed the Desert Archaic Culture--nomadic hunter-gatherers with developed basketry, flaked-stem stone tools, a ...

HURON
HISTORY©
(revised 10.2.00)
Note:
This is a single part of what will be, by my classification, about 240 compact tribal histories (contact to 1900). It is limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also includes those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles (Micmac, Assiniboine, etc.).
This history's content and style are representative. The normal process at this point is to circulate an almost finished product among a peer group for comment and criticism ...

I am a tree that stands tall yet frail.
My branches reach out but cannot hail
The remains of this forsaken world
And nature forgotten, unwontedly hurled.
Take my branch and your might can twist,
But I will not snap from only your jest.
Nor will I lash out in vengeful strike
But in the breeze I’ll return as right.
