Basic Input/Output System
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. The photo above shows an example of what a built in BIOS program looks like. BIOS programs vary from computer to computer, but every computer has one. Without any disks or even a hard drive, the BIOS program is always available, written permanently on the BIOS chip. It is used to set up the computer's hardware. BIOS
BIOS is an acronym of Basic Input/Output System. It's the program that tells DOS (and Windows 95, but to a lesser extent) how to communicate with the various peices of hardware on a computer. It also contains routines that find out where the boot programs are and load the operating system from a disk.
There are two parts of the BIOS that people usually see. One is the Power On Self-Test (called POST for short) which runs every time ...

I have received numerous emails stating, "You keep telling me about 'flashing the Bios', but how do you do that?"
Excellent question. It seems I progressed a bit too rapidly and now we need to take a moment to catch everyone up. Sometimes we all begin to make assumptions, forgetting that some things are not always known. So... let us jump in...

BIOS chip
The BIOS resides in either 8-bit wide FLASH EPROM (older boards) or serial EEPROM (G100 and G200 based boards). This does not influence the speed, because in case of PCI and AGP boards the BIOS image is always copied to shadow RAM on system board before execution.
