Obesity. Is it an eating disorder?
Like most things, obesity is a complex phenomenon about which it is dangerous to generalize. What is true for one person is not necessarily true for the next. Nevertheless, we shall try to make sense out of conflicting theories and give answers to people who struggle to maintain self-esteem in a world that seems to be obsessed with youth, thinness, and the perfect body -- whatever that may be.
What is obesity?

Obesity and the Risk of Heart Disease
Many studies suggest that obesity is a key factor in the developing heart disease and, specifically, heart attack. Obesity has an aggravating effect on atherosclerosis. This is especially true when the body fat distribution is located in the middle of the body, the gut and love handles.
While obesity may have some genetic factors associated with it, in many cases it could be either prevented or reversed with a little effort. Often obesity begin ...

Obesity Causes Daytime Sleepiness
6-22-98
Hershey, Pa. -- New research from Penn State's College of Medicine finds that obese patients, compared with a control group, were much sleepier during the day and their nighttime sleep was also disturbed.
"Daytime sleepiness and fatigue is a frequent complaint of obese people. However, to our knowledge, no study has objectively assessed the degree of daytime sleepiness in obese patients who did not have sleep apnea or any other sleep disorder," expl ...

December 1997 — U.S. Edition
Fen/phen is gone. America's epidemic of obesity is still here.
Something is making us fatter than we've ever been. One out of two Americans is now overweight. As recently as the early 1980's, it was "only" one in four.
Clearly, we're eating too much and moving too little. Many people sit in front of computers all day, then go home and sit in front of the TV 'til bedtime. It doesn't help that restaurant entrees -- and even appetizers -- can p ...

Overweight Kids
Many parents worry about whether their kids are at an unhealthy weight. One way to know for sure is to check with your child's doctor, who will determine if your child is above the ideal weight for her height and age. If your child is moderately overweight, there will probably be no talk of dieting at this age. Instead, the emphasis will be on lowering the rate of weig ...

A Connection to Obesity
The effect of increased weight on the risk of developing diabetes.
Researchers have long known that obesity is a risk factor for diabetes. At the Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, researchers are gaining a better understanding of the connection between the two conditions.
In the 1980s, studies first indicated clearly that not only is obesity a risk factor for d ...
