Utah Centennial Studies Adaptation...Mammoths To Man Packet A INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE WOOLLY MAMMOTH The Age of Mammals Small mammals were alive when dinosaurs roamed the earth. No one is quite certain why dinosaurs died out. Some scientists think it could have been a change in the climate. Others have said that there might have been a major disaster, like a comet crashing into the earth. With these large creatures out of the way, the mammals could develop. It took many milli ...

Dead As A ... The dodo is now extinct. Dodos were descendents of a type of pigeon, which settled on Mauritius over 4 million years ago. With no predators to attack them they evolved into a ground bird incapable of flight. In 1598 the Dutch took possession of the island, using it as a port for sailing ships travelling across the Indian Ocean. Sailors stopping at the island would slaughter the unwary bird for sport. The last dodos were finally killed off in the 1670s after introduced predatory ...

The Dodo is a lesson in extinction. First sighted around 1600 on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, the Dodo was extinct less than eighty years later. Thus while the skeleton (above) on view in the Museum is real, the model (below) is not, as there are no complete Dodo specimens. Some of the birds may have been eaten by the Dutch sailors who discovered them. However, the primary causes of their extinction were the destruction of the forest (which cut off the Dodo's food supply) ...

Species Extinction The Story of the Passenger Pigeon By Clive Ponting Probably the most terrible example of mass slaughter in the history of wildlife was not the bison but the passenger pigeon - a story that almost defies belief. The early Europeans in North America frequently commented on the huge numbers of blue, long-tailed, fast and graceful pigeons in the country. One of the first settlers in Virginia wrote that, `There are wild pigeons in winter beyond number or imagination, mysel ...

Pigeon Collection John James Audobon wrote of the passenger pigeon in 1844 in The Birds of America: "The Multitudes of wild pigeons in our woods are astonishing. Indeed, after having viewed them so often, and under so many circumstances, I even new feel inclined to pause, and assure myself that what I am going to relate is fact. Yet I have seen it all, and that too in the company of persons who, like myself, were struck in amazement." "In the autumn of 1813, I left my house at Henderson (Kent ...

Stag-moose The stag-moose or elk (scientific name Cervalces scotti) is an extinct deer slightly larger than the modern moose. Its name, stag-moose, refers to the fact that it looks much like a cross between an elk and a moose. If you had been around to see one alive, you might have thought it looked like a stilt-legged moose with the face of an elk and very complex palmate antlers. Palmate antlers are shaped like the palm of a hand, i.e. they have large flat areas and thinner projections. ...

The Great Auk Alca impennis Lying to the west of the coast of Devon, England, shut off from outside sometimes for days on end by blankets of fog and swirls of grey rain cloud, is lonely Lundy - Isle of Puffins. Here, in or about the year 1835, a resident saw two birds the like of which he ...

Extinct animals are animals which have completely disappeared. When the number of deaths become greater than the number of births for an organism, there is always a possibility that that organism may become extinct if the trend does not reverse itself. Extinction refers to both the disappearance of pre-historic life forms as well as the more recent ones. We know that a great number of prehistoric animals became extinct (not just evolved) because of fossils. In the 19 ...
