Welcome to Terri Husted's Homepage!
A Homepage for New (And Not So New) Math Teachers
This homepage was created to give new math teachers ideas and suggestions to help with their teaching. Even though I've been teaching for more than twenty years, I do not have all the answers. My first advice to anyone starting in teaching is to be careful of those who claim they know the perfect method of teaching. Teaching is an on-going learning experience. You will be challenged to use man ...

Welcome to MathMagic on the Web!
All About MathMagic:
MathMagic was a K-12 telecommunications project developed in El Paso, Texas by Alan A. Hodson. Idea:
For years I placed the wooden puzzles in my classroom, and encouraged my children to go put a puzzle together. I came up with an idea several years ago that works great and creates a reason/motivation for the children to go put together puzzles. I purchased a couple 3 minute egg timers (the kind where the children can see the sand running through the glass). Then I made a ...

These activities reinforce students' understanding by using rhythm, physical action, and introspection.
Learning psychologist Howard Gardner proposed that each learner reflects his or her unique combination of intellectual strengths and weaknesses. Gardner's theory of seven intelligences (linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic) has inspired many educators to present content in a variety of ways so individual students ...

The Most Colorful Math of All
Overview
Believe it or not, coloring is a profound mathematical topic with many multi-million-dollar industrial applications. The problem presented here has been of interest to mathematicians for over a hundred years. Some versions of the problem are easy to solve, others have yielded only recently to relentless efforts that would not have been possible without the aid of powerful computers. In all of its aspects, the basic problem is the same: How man ...

The Mathematics Behind the Maps
How many different colors must you have available if you want to color a map so that countries that share a boundary line are not colored the same color? In the mid-1800's this problem became known among a small group of mathematicians as a popular unsolved problem. Even at that time, it was common knowledge among map-makers that 4 colors seemed to be sufficient to color a map. This wasn't actually proved, however, until 1976.
Even though we now know t ...
