After the elections of 1991, the flag was established with a blue field bearing a ring of 10 yellow stars to symbolize the 10 islands of Cape Verde. The stripes of white-red-white suggest peace and national resolve. Red, white, and blue also are a symbolic link to Portugal and the United States. The new flag became official on Sept. 25, 1992.
