An Introduction to Buddhism
To do no evil;
To cultivate good;
To purify one's mind:
This is the teaching of the Buddhas.
--The Dhammapada
The Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama, a prince of the Sakya tribe of Nepal, in approximately 566 BC. When he was twentynine years old, he left the comforts of his home to seek the meaning of the suffering he saw around him. After six years of arduous yogic training, he abandoned the way of self-mortification and instead sat in mindful medi ...

What is a Buddhist?
by Ven. Shih Shen Lung
Traditionally, being and becoming a Buddhist has always been a quite simple. In the first days of the Great Teacher, there were no laymen or laywomen, just monks (and later, nuns) who approached the community (Sangha) and asked admittance. They publicly recited a small formula and were admitted to the group. Later rules for deportment were created. With this evolution, the creation of the Buddhist laity also took place. The vows for the laity, then an ...

Definition of Buddhism
The religious, monastic system, founded c. 500 B.C. on the basis of pantheistic Brahminism. The speculations of the Vedanta school of religious thought, in the eighth and following centuries, B.C., gave rise to several rival schemes of salvation. These movements started with the same morbid view that conscious life is a burden and not worth the living, and that true happiness is to be had only in a state like dreamless sleep free from all desires, free from conscious acti ...

Introduction to Buddhist Meditation
by Ajahn Buddhadasa
Mindfulness, Mental Training and Development
Why should we train our mind? Because we want to free it from all kinds of mental distortions such as greed, hatred, anger, stresses, strains, and despair. When our mind is free from all kinds of these mental distortions we can live blissfully and peacefully. That's why we have to train our mind, by means of Insight, by the Nature Method, and Vipassana (insight (or mindfulness) meditation. ...

THAIBUDDHISM
The three greatest religions in the world is Buddhism, Christianity and Mohammedanism. Buddhism, however, is the oldest of the three. It was founded 2,500 years ago by Lord Buddha. Buddha was a son of an Indian king. Buddha was the name he called himself after his Enlightenment, meaning The Enlightened. His real name was Price Siddhattha. His father was King Suddhodana of Kapilavasdu, and his mother Queen Siri Mahamaaya, formerly a daughter of the King of Devadaha.

S.ad.darshana, the "Six Schools" or "Six Doctrines" of "orthodox" Indian philosophy are the schools that accept the authority of the Vedas and thus religiously are considered part of Hinduism. The Buddhist perspective of lay morality
by Dr. (Mrs) Bodhippriya Subhadra Siriwardena, M. A. PhD (London)
Extracts from a talk given on the Sanghamitta day celebrations at the London Buddhist Vihara, 1996.

We don't know why Buddhism declined in the last half of the first millenium AD. By the time the Muslims began conquering India in the twelfth century, the number of monasteries had severely declined. Buddhism, which once had spread across the face of India, was a vital force only in the areas of its origins. Scholars believe that the monasteries became detached from everyday life in India. After centuries of patronage, the monasteries had amassed a wealth of endowments. Life ins ...

Welcome to the home of the Honmon Butsuryushu on the web. The HBS is a world wide community of the followers of Nichiren Shonin. The HBS was created in the nineteenth century by Nissen Shonin in order to restore Nichiren Shonin's teachings and advance the spread of Buddhism. It is in this spirit that we, the HBS, extend an invitation to you to learn about Nichiren Buddhism and perhaps to become part of our international community.
