Definitions
Sporozoite - Slender spindle-shaped organism that is the infective stage of the malria parasite. It is the result of the sexual reproductive cycle of the parasite which occurs in the mosquito.
Schizogony - Asexual reproduction of malaria parasites. Occurs in the liver (exoerythrocytic schizongony) and in the red cells (erythrocytic schizogony).
Merozoite - The product of schizogony.

Falciparum Malaria
Falciparum malaria was one of the two types found in VN, the other being vivax. There are four general types of malaria in the world, and we were exposed to two of them.

What is malaria?

Malaria is an infection caused by the malaria parasite entering the bloodstream. The parasite may gain entry through the bite of an infected mosquito or infected blood transferred by blood transfusion or a contaminated injection needle.
