Turkey Vulture
Cathartes aura (Linnaeus)
Status Rare visitant. Although there are no published nineteenth-century records, Piers' notes refer to museum specimens (not extant) taken from Clarks Harbour, Shelburne County, in fall 1892 and from Pugwash, Cumberland County, about 1899. King Vulture
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Vultures serve a useful purpose in disposing of dead and decaying animal remains, as well as in cleaning up in areas of poor or non-existent sanitation. This, however, does not make them popular with people.
The bare head and neck enables them to become fouled up in their efforts to obtain food without endangering their plumage.
Their feet are designed for perching, and are not adapted to seizing and killing or holding prey, as are those o ...

vulture
Vulture is the common name for two groups of carrion-eating birds. The American vultures are similar to large birds of prey, but are probably more closely related to storks, with which they share some anatomical and behavioral features. The Eurasian and African vultures probably descended from eaglelike birds.
All vultures are large birds with a naked head and hooked bill. They feed almost entirely on carrion (dead animals), occasionally attacking newborn or wound ...
