WHAT IS AGORAPHOBIA
The term agoraphobia has been widely misunderstood. Its literal definition suggests a fear of "open spaces". However, this is an incomplete and misleading view. Agoraphobia
When most people think of agoraphobia, they think of "fear of open spaces" (about the opposite of claustrophobia). However, in psychological terms, that is not what agoraphobia is. It is a complicated disorder, often very crippling.
Agoraphobia is basically the fear of leaving one's "safe place". A safe place could be their house, their home town, or even just their room.

Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia
11/24/98
by Charles H. Booras, MD
All humans have a built-in "alarm system" that goes off when they feel threatened. This alarm starts chemical, physical and emotional changes that prepare us to either flee or fight the danger that triggered the alarm ("Flight or Fight Response). In some people, this alarm may go off unexpectedly, creating a very strong sense of threat when no danger is present. This "false alarm" is called a panic attack. It occurs in a c ...

One-week intensive treatment program for panic with agoraphobia
People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. In between times there is a persistent, lingering worry that another attack could come any minute.
When a panic attack strikes, most likely your heart pounds and ...
